Ghana ,Burkina Faso strengthen cooperation after high-level bilateral talks

Ghana and Burkina Faso have taken significant steps to reinforce their longstanding diplomatic relations following high-level engagements between officials of the two countries.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, held extensive discussions with Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, as well as his counterpart, Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.

The talks focused on deepening cooperation across security, transport, disaster management, and cross-border relations.

Both sides condemned recent terrorist attacks within the sub-region and extended condolences to affected families.

They agreed to design and implement a strengthened security framework aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism, recognizing the growing security challenges facing West Africa.

A key outcome of the discussions was the establishment of a structured partnership on disaster prevention and management.

This collaboration is expected to enhance joint preparedness and response efforts, particularly in addressing the recurring Bagré Dam spillage, which has historically caused significant flooding and humanitarian concerns in affected communities.

The renewed momentum in bilateral relations follows earlier engagements between President John Dramani Mahama and Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré. Their meetings paved the way for the reactivation of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which had been dormant for six years.

At the conclusion of the latest PJCC session, seven agreements were signed.

These include arrangements on mutual recognition of national driver’s licenses, transport and road transit cooperation, cross-border collaboration frameworks, periodic consultations between border authorities, reaffirmation of the shared boundary, disaster and humanitarian crisis management, and joint efforts to combat illicit drug cultivation and trafficking.

Officials described the meetings as productive and forward-looking, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to sustaining strong diplomatic, economic, and security ties.

The engagements underscore a shared determination to promote regional stability and foster mutually beneficial development between Accra and Ouagadougou.
