Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep concern over what he describes as troubling developments under the administration of President John Mahama. In a statement released on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Dr. Bawumia called on the President to address issues he believes pose a significant threat to Ghana‘s democracy.

According to Dr Bawumia, despite his initial decision to give the new government space to govern, recent actions by the Mahama administration have compelled him to speak out. He highlighted the dismissal of individuals employed during the previous administration, including public servants, security personnel, nurses, and teachers, as a major concern.

“It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless,” he stated.

Dr Bawumia further raised alarm over reports of government raids on the homes of former officials, attacks on journalists, and the use of the military in ways he likened to a “military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition.”

He emphasized that the change Ghanaians voted for in the 2024 elections was meant to advance national development, not to target individuals based on political affiliations. He urged President Mahama to “be a president for all Ghanaians” by reversing unfair dismissals and ensuring the protection of state institutions, the Constitution, and democracy.

“These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the earlier action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practice, the better it would be for Ghana’s forward march,” Dr Bawumia said.

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to Ghana’s democratic principles and calling for unity in governance.
