Organized Labour has announced plans to initiate an indefinite strike starting from July 10, 2023. The strike action is in response to the dismissal of three local union leaders by Sunon Asogli Power Limited.
The union leaders were terminated after joining the Ghana Mine Workers Union, which operates under the umbrella of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
The decision to strike follows unsuccessful attempts to resolve the situation and reinstate the workers.
During a press conference in Accra on June 26, the Secretary General of the TUC, Dr Yaw Baah, expressed frustration over the violation of workers' rights by Sunon Asogli.
Despite engagements with government officials and stakeholders, the workers have not been reinstated.
In response, Organized Labour has taken a decisive stance. Dr Baah stated, “On July 10, if our three brothers have not been reinstated, no worker will go to work… all workers of Ghana are going to stay at home.”
He emphasized that the strike would not be limited to civil and public service workers but would also involve commercial drivers, with no vehicles operating on the designated strike day.
