In an official statement released on January 24, 2024, the Office of the President declared significant changes in the leadership of the , effective February 1, 2024.

The current Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff. This appointment, announced by President Nana Addo Dankwa , is subject to consultation with the Council of State, as per the constitutional provisions outlined in Article 212.

The decision to appoint Major General Oppong-Peprah to the role of Chief of Defence Staff comes in anticipation of the retirement of the incumbent Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama. Vice Admiral Amoama's tour of duty concludes on February 1, 2024. President expressed gratitude to Vice Admiral Amoama for his dedicated and meritorious service to both the and the nation.

Simultaneously, President Akufo-Addo has named Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona as the new Chief of Army Staff, succeeding Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah. Like the former appointment, Major General Onwona's designation is contingent on consultation with the Council of State, in adherence to the constitutional guidelines.

Major General Onwona, prior to this appointment, served as the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

It's important to note that Rear Admiral Issah Adams Yakubu and Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe will retain their current positions as Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff, respectively.
