The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Majority has expressed condolences and paid tribute to the late Mr. Enoch Teye Mensah (ET Mensah), a Member of the Council of State, in a statement issued by Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament.
The statement acknowledged the rapid departure of Mr. ET Mensah, who had served as a Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Chief Executive of Accra, and Minister of Youth and Sports. It noted that Mr. Mensah was an activist during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era, and his contributions were significant.
While acknowledging that ET Mensah's style of governance raised questions, especially regarding his involvement in the day-to-day management of the sectors he supervised, the statement highlighted his achievements.
It mentioned his pivotal role in qualifying the Black Stars for the Nations Cup Tournament in Senegal in 1992.
In the parliamentary arena, the statement recounted ET Mensah's roles as Minority Deputy Whip and later Chief Whip during President Kufuor's regime. It noted that he also served as Chief Whip during President John Evans Atta Mills' tenure.
Despite losing his re-election bid in the NDC's internal Parliamentary Primaries, Mr. Mensah returned to the political scene in 2017 when he was elected to the Council of State as a representative for the Greater Accra Region.
The statement concluded with a tribute to Mr. ET Mensah's vibrant personality and offered condolences to his family, the NDC, and Parliament, wishing his soul eternal rest.
