The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its support for the actions taken by the Minority Caucus in Parliament to protest the prosecution of its legislators.
The Minority MPs had boycotted parliamentary activities on multiple occasions to show solidarity with their colleague, James Gyakye Quayson, who is facing prosecution for perjury.
The NDC believes that the cases against its MPs, including Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Asutifi South MP Collins Dauda, and Gyakye Quayson, are part of government tactics to persecute its legislators.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, ruled that the Minority's boycott without an official notification and approval amounts to a breach of the standing orders of the house, which could result in members losing their seats.
However, the NDC MPs are not concerned about the possibility of losing their seats. The National Communications Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, stated that they are aware of the legal consequences of their actions, but they remain resolute in their stance to defend the constitution and democracy.
Gyamfi asserted, “These threats of MPs losing their seats if they continue with the boycott, do not move us at all because what we are doing is in the interest of our constitution and democracy. We are mindful of all these legal issues, and you can rest assured that we will not get to that stage. But it is not for us to disclose our strategy relative to some of these issues.”
