NDC Parliamentary minority urges government action on energy crisis

The National Democratic Congress () Parliamentary Minority has called on the Government to address the ongoing energy crisis, which is significantly impacting socio-economic activities across the country.

Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, the Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee of and Member of for Yapai Kusawgu made the appeal during a press conference at the Parliament House in .

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Mr Jinapor noted that since February 2nd, there has been consistent load shedding by power-generating companies, with the situation worsening day by day.

Mr Jinapor expressed concern that on the very day His Excellency the President was delivering the State of the Nation Address, utility companies were shedding the load, exacerbating the situation.

He further revealed that just yesterday, there was a staggering 530-megawatt deficit, leading to power curtailment to neighbouring countries such as La Côte d'Ivoire, , and .

Investigations conducted by Mr. Jinapor indicated that several thermal plants, including TAPCO and TICO, were offline, exacerbating the shortage. Moreover, there was a critical shortage of fuel in the system, further compounding the problem.

Mr. Jinapor emphasized that due to financial constraints, the Government had failed to procure adequate fuel to power the nation's thermal plants, resulting in the ongoing load shedding experienced by Ghanaians.

He stressed that one month of continuous load shedding was unacceptable and called on the authorities in the power sector to communicate transparently with the Ghanaian people so they can adequately plan for the challenges ahead.
