, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (), has voiced strong criticism against the New Patriotic Party () for what he perceives as a failure to make substantial progress in the country's road sector, despite the 's proclaimed “Year of Roads” initiative.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Nsawura, in the region, Mr Mahama raised concerns about the deteriorating state of roads under the current administration.

He specifically accused the government of neglecting regular maintenance, leading to road contractors being unpaid and abandoning project sites.

“Road contractors remain unpaid, leading to them abandoning sites and relocating. Despite the government's declaration of three consecutive years as the Year of Roads, there is little evidence of progress as numerous roads across the country are in a deplorable state,” Mahama stated.

He highlighted the adverse impact of deteriorating road conditions on vehicles and pledged that the next government would prioritize addressing these issues.

Furthermore, Mahama criticized the overall performance of the -led government, stating that virtually every sector in the country is under distress.

He expressed the view that the NDC needs to return to power to rectify the challenges faced by different sectors.

“Every sector in the country is under distress. I have said before that the development of a nation is like a baton race, but unfortunately, the baton I handed over to and Dr Bawumia fell along the way. So we [NDC] have to come back, pick up the baton, and continue the race,” Mahama emphasized.

The critique from the former president comes amid ongoing debates about the effectiveness of the NPP's initiatives, especially in the road sector.
