NDC elected John Mahama as flagbearer to rescue Ghana from economic failure – Haruna Iddrisu

Former Minority Leader and MP for South, , has stated that has been elected as the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress () to rescue Ghana from the /Bawumia government.

Speaking at the post-election speech ceremony held in honour of John Mahama at the University of Development Studies in , criticized the government for subjecting Ghanaians to excruciating hardships.

Haruna Iddrisu described John Mahama as a leader with integrity and compassion who is capable of leading the country. He stated, “Former President Mahama is not a sketch but a full portrait of a leader… For him, public service is a calling, and he's only come back to lead the to rescue our country.”

Iddrisu further criticized the current government's economic policies and referred to Mahama as the man to rescue the economy. He said, “Following the deception of the New Patriotic Party government under Nana Addo Dankwa , the people of NDC have spoken loud and eloquently that they need a rescuer. That rescuer is Mr Mahama.”

The acceptance speech ceremony was attended by party executives, chiefs, and party members, celebrating Mahama's landslide victory in the just-ended primaries of the party.

During the NDC's primaries on May 13, 2023, John Mahama secured an overwhelming victory, receiving 98.9% of the total valid votes, while his contender Kojo Bonsu received 1.1% of the votes.

The declaration of results was announced by the 's returning officer in the early hours of May 14.

Former Governor, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, and former Mayor, Kojo Bonsu, were initially part of the contest, but Dr Duffuor withdrew from the race citing concerns about discrepancies with the party's electoral roll.

The announcement of John Mahama's victory was made at the party's head office in , and his campaign team had expressed confidence in securing a significant majority of the votes in the primaries.
