Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Overloads of Mamprugu and Gonjaland to intervene in the ongoing hostilities between sections of the Gonja and Mamprusi communities along a disputed border between the Soo and Wasipe traditional areas.
In a statement, he expressed regret and disappointment over the recent clashes that have resulted in property damage and loss of lives.
Former President Mahama emphasized the long history of peaceful coexistence and familial ties between the Gonjas and Mamprusis through intermarriage and social relationships.
He urged the communities to prioritize peaceful resolution through dialogue rather than resorting to violence at the slightest provocation. He stressed the importance of unity and the need to focus on combating poverty and deprivation as common adversaries.
Calling for immediate intervention, Former President Mahama called upon the Overloads of Mamprugu and Gonjaland, as well as the Paramount Chiefs of the Soo and Wasipe Traditional Areas, to restore calm and employ traditional and peaceful means to resolve the dispute.
He also urged the Ministers of Chieftaincy, National Security, and the Interior, along with the North East and Savanna Regional Security Councils, to take swift action in resolving the conflict and restoring peace to the area.
Former President Mahama assured the people of Mamprugu and Gonjaland of his willingness to assist in any way possible to achieve lasting peace in the region.
