Former President John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has outlined a commitment to rejuvenate the joy of farming and bring about a revolution in Ghana's agricultural sector if elected in the next administration.
Mahama assured that the NDC's focus would be on prioritizing the welfare of farmers and ensuring they receive adequate resources and support to thrive.
In a Facebook post commemorating National Farmers' Day 2023, he expressed gratitude to Ghana's farmers and emphasized their pivotal role in the country's economy.
“Our farmers are the backbone of our economy, and we will continue to invest in their success,” Mahama stated.
Celebrating the occasion dedicated to recognizing the efforts of farmers in ensuring food security and contributing to the economy, Mahama highlighted the importance of innovation and resilience in agriculture, aligned with this year's theme, “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience.”
The former President outlined the NDC's commitment to bringing back the joy of farming and revolutionizing the agricultural sector.
He articulated a vision for achieving food self-sufficiency through a policy supporting large-scale commercial agricultural production, facilitated by a robust cooperative system.
Furthermore, Mahama proposed the establishment of Farmers Service Centres nationwide to enhance access to agricultural credit and inputs.
He emphasized the introduction of agro-processing units in all regions to add value to agricultural products, creating more opportunities for farmers across the country.
The targeted crops for processing include palm, cashew, groundnuts, cotton, coffee, cocoa, soya, cassava, shea nuts, cereals, ginger, spices, cut flowers, fruits, and horticultural products.
Mahama concluded his message by assuring farmers that the next NDC government would prioritize their welfare, working tirelessly to ensure they have the necessary resources and support to thrive.
He expressed heartfelt congratulations to all Ghanaian farmers on National Farmers' Day, acknowledging their crucial role in feeding the nation.
