Ghana to host high-level side event on reparatory justice during 81st UN General Assembly

The global momentum behind the quest for reparatory justice is massive, with the historic United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/250 declaring the enslavement of Africans the gravest crime against humanity. The resolution was realised by a coalition of the African Union, CARICOM, and the African Diaspora.

The year 2026 marks a pivotal moment as the global community collectively grapples with the transatlantic slave trade, described as a heinous crime against humanity that must never be forgotten.

Following the Next Steps Conference held in Accra in June this year, three panels were established to propel the reparatory justice agenda forward. They are the High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, the Global Experts Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Heritage, and the Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.

The panels are mandated to lead efforts in unearthing the truth, advocating for restitution, and ensuring that the language of justice permeates the halls of power and policymaking. The return of looted African artefacts, legislative repeals such as France’s Code Noir, and historic acknowledgements and commitments from global institutions are identified as tangible milestones on the road to justice.

Ghana will host a high-level side event on 23rd September during the 81st United Nations General Assembly Session in New York. The event will receive progress reports from the established panels and catalyse a global dialogue on reparatory justice.

Ghana has invited all to join the endeavour as it continues to lead the charge for justice, restitution, and dignity for Africa and people of African descent worldwide. The invitation is also framed as a call for unity and the relentless pursuit of justice.
