Ablakwa dismisses reports of a single Ghanaian evacuation from South Africa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has dismissed reports claiming that only one Ghanaian was evacuated from South Africa by a government-chartered flight.

According to the Minister, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, H.E. Benjamin Quarshie, located a Ghanaian, Sylvester Boakye, who reportedly missed an updated evacuation notice and was the only person to report to O.R. Tambo International Airport.

The Minister assured that Sylvester Boakye would not be left out of the planned evacuation exercise, which is expected to cover about 800 Ghanaians seeking to return home.

He stated that no Ghanaian willing to return home would be left behind.

Hon. Ablakwa explained that the High Commissioner’s meeting with Sylvester Boakye at Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria disproved reports that the individual had already been airlifted to Ghana.

According to the Minister, no chartered flight was dispatched by the Government of Ghana because Ghanaian and South African authorities agreed to postpone the evacuation pending the resolution of legal, technical and logistical requirements.
