Ghana Federation of Labour calls for standards to protect workers' welfare: Ghana News

Mr. Abraham Koomson, the Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, has urged labour unions to establish standards to combat the abuse of their members within the working environment.

Speaking at the Ghana Agency's Regional Office platform, he emphasized the critical role of standards in promoting workers' welfare.

“In the of work, you could be used as a dormant if you do not raise your standard of operation, hence the need for labour unions to be in the lead to be able to promote the welfare of their members,” said Mr Koomson.

He highlighted the connection between the lack of quality standards set by labour unions and the abuse of workers, stating, “If they know that you are not serious, they will use you. If you make yourself cheap, that is your problem.

So basically, it all depends on their leaders; they must ensure that the welfare of their members is paramount, and no employer will play with it.”

Mr. Koomson provided an example where his office utilized Section 9 of the Labour Act to challenge a policy requiring the use of only the to pay workers.

He encouraged other labour unions to emulate such actions, emphasizing the importance of protecting the welfare of their members.

In addition, Mr Koomson called on the government to address the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians, especially public sector workers dependent on meager wages.

He expressed concern over the financial crisis experienced by Ghanaian workers, stating, “Ghanaian workers are experiencing a financial crisis that cannot be sustained this year; the government must intervene and alleviate the burden.”

He warned of a potential worker revolt if economic hardships persist, urging the government to engage proactively with labour unions through salary adjustments and the timely payment of statutory benefits.
