Ms Harriet Adelaide Tagoe, Managing Director of Afram Publications, congratulated the students and highlighted that some of the debate points would be communicated to relevant authorities for action. She also announced plans to review the debate format and school selection criteria for next year.
Ms Grace Obeng, representing SIC Insurance Plc, encouraged the students to utilise the computer for research and applauded the all-girls win, noting its significance for affirmative action. Mr Benjamin Tawiah Klu, Executive Secretary of GPA, urged students to patronise books with local content that promote Ghanaian culture.
This year’s debate involved representatives from Tema, Okuapeman, Swedru, and Winneba SHS. Swedru SHS argued against the motion, “The devastating effect of illegal mining (galamsey) on the environment is due to non-implementation of appropriate policies,” while Winneba SHS argued in favour. Tema SHS and Okuapeman SHS debated strategies to tackle indiscipline in schools, focusing on the motion, “Indiscipline in schools is a result of deficiencies in the school curriculum.”
In the finale, Tema SHS and Winneba SHS faced off on the motion, “The publishing industry has been adversely affected by the lack of copyright enforcement: Are authors and publishers deserving of copyright protection?”, with Tema SHS ultimately securing the win.
The event showcased students’ analytical skills and highlighted key societal issues, from environmental challenges to educational policy and copyright protection.
