Sharks Quiz orders tie-breaker replay after controversial quarterfinal decision

Organisers of the Sharks Quiz have ordered a replay of the tie-breaker round between Keta Senior High Technical School and St. Augustine’s College following a disputed answer during their quarterfinal contest.

The highly competitive match ended in controversy after a tie-breaker question in English asked: “In Greek tragedy, what term describes the moment of highest tension in the plot?” KETASCO responded with “Climax,” but the answer was not accepted at the time.

AUGUSCO then answered the subsequent question and were declared winners.

However, a formal protest triggered a review by the Sharks Quiz Jury and Academic Board. After examining literary interpretations, the Board concluded that while “Peripeteia” refers specifically to a reversal of fortune in Greek tragedy, “Climax” is a widely accepted term describing the point of highest tension in a narrative, including within Greek tragedy contexts.

Based on this finding, the Board ruled that KETASCO’s answer was valid and should have been accepted.

In the interest of fairness and maintaining the integrity of the competition, organisers have directed that the tie-breaker round be re-run on Monday, March 23, 2026, to determine the rightful winner.

The Academic Board commended both schools for their discipline, performance, and sportsmanship throughout the contest, emphasizing that the decision reflects a commitment to academic accuracy and fair adjudication.

Stakeholders and supporters have been urged to remain confident in the credibility of the Sharks Quiz as the competition continues.
