Truck driver raises alarm over rapid deterioration of Atwima Boko-Abuakwa Makro road

A Ghanaian truck driver has voiced serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the Atwima Boko-Abuakwa Makro road in the Ashanti Region.

The driver noted that the stretch, which was constructed less than a year ago, has already developed significant defects, including potholes, cracks, and surface failures.

The revelation has sparked fresh questions about the quality of road construction and maintenance in the country, especially on newly completed projects.

According to the truck driver, the road has deteriorated rapidly despite its recent construction. Heavy-duty vehicles that ply the route daily are particularly affected, facing increased risks of accidents and vehicle damage, as well as higher maintenance costs.

Rapid deterioration of newly constructed roads is a recurring issue in parts of Ghana. Common contributing factors include substandard construction materials or workmanship, inadequate supervision during construction, poor drainage systems that lead to water damage, overloading trucks beyond the road’s design capacity, and a lack of timely maintenance after handover.

The Atwima Boko-Abuakwa Makro road serves as an important link for commercial and local traffic, making its poor state particularly problematic for economic activities in the area.

This situation highlights systemic challenges in Ghana’s road infrastructure sector, including questions about value for money in public contracts, the need for stricter quality control and post-construction monitoring, the economic cost of poor roads, and the impact on public confidence in government infrastructure projects.

Stakeholders are urging the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority to conduct an immediate technical assessment of the road, hold contractors accountable for defects appearing within the defects liability period, carry out remedial works to restore the road to acceptable standards, and strengthen quality assurance mechanisms for future projects.

The truck driver’s public concern has amplified calls for greater transparency and accountability in road construction contracts across the country. Authorities are expected to respond promptly with concrete actions to address the defects and prevent recurrence in future projects.
