Tensions rose sharply in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday after the National Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, clashed with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during an unannounced visit to the NDC’s local office.

The unexpected presence of Afenyo-Markin and his team triggered heated confrontations with party executives and supporters. Azorka, known for his fiery political style, condemned the visit as “highly disrespectful” and “provocative,” accusing the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to intimidate NDC supporters ahead of the by-election.

Some NDC members further alleged that the Minority Leader’s entourage had entered the party office to remove campaign posters of their candidate. A furious Azorka warned of consequences, saying, “A by-election will be held in his [Afenyo-Markin’s] constituency if he tries anything. What does he want here? Is he the NDC secretary? You people should talk to them.”

He accused the NPP of using the Akwatia by-election as a testing ground for “undemocratic strategies” and vowed that the NDC would resist any such moves.

Meanwhile, police confirmed the arrest of one individual in connection with earlier scuffles in the constituency.
