UN Secretary-General appoints Ms. Diene Keita as new Executive Director of UNFPA

A leader with deep African and global experience

Ms Keita, a national of Guinea, brings over 30 years of international development and public service experience to the role.

Her extensive work across Africa, including serving as UN Resident Coordinator in multiple countries and as UNFPA Representative in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, uniquely positions her to guide the Fund’s work, particularly in regions facing complex demographic and health challenges.

The UNFPA statement emphasised that her background is especially relevant to Ghana’s efforts in improving sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and youth empowerment.

Steady rise through the UN system

Before this appointment, Ms Keita had been serving as Acting Executive Director since July 2025, and previously held the role of UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNFPA Deputy Executive Director (Programme) from 2020. Her UN career began in 1990 with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Her professional mission has consistently centred on empowering women and youth, combating gender-based violence, and promoting sustainable development.

“A pivotal moment for global population and health rights”

During her swearing-in ceremony, Ms Keita expressed gratitude and outlined the urgency of UNFPA’s work amid shifting global demographics.

“UNFPA’s mission to uphold rights and choices is more essential than ever. By protecting sexual and reproductive health, we strengthen societies and enable women and young people to thrive, creating stronger, more resilient nations,” she said.

Impact on Ghana’s development priorities

UNFPA Ghana Country Representative, Dr Wilfred Ochan, welcomed the appointment, describing it as a major boost to ongoing programmes in Ghana. He noted that Ms. Keita’s leadership aligns with national priorities such as:

  • reducing preventable maternal deaths,
  • expanding access to family planning,
  • eliminating gender-based violence,
  • strengthening demographic resilience, and
  • empowering young people.

Academic and professional profile

Ms Keita holds a doctorate in Law as well as advanced degrees in International Economics, Development Law, and International Relations from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She is fluent in English, French, and Italian, underscoring her global versatility as she assumes leadership of UNFPA.
