Police return GH¢85,000 found on Techiman–Kumasi Highway to owner

The Ghana Police Service has returned a bag containing GH¢85,000 to its rightful owner after it was found along the Techiman-Kumasi Highway in the Bono East Region.

According to a statement issued by the Bono East Regional Police Command in Techiman, officers on duty at a police snap check point discovered the bag at about 4:20 a.m. on February 14, 2026.

The duty team, led by Inspector George Appiah and three other officers, retrieved the bag and found it contained a substantial amount of cash.

The bag was subsequently handed over to the Regional Command for further investigation and verification.

Police contacted the phone number written on the bag, and a 53-year-old businessman from Ashtown, Kumasi, identified as Stephen Ofori, responded. He later reported to the checkpoint and claimed ownership of the bag.

Mr. Ofori explained that the money, amounting to GH¢85,000, had been withdrawn from GCB Bank in Wa and was being transported to Kumasi in a commercial vehicle when it was accidentally lost. The cash was counted and verified in his presence, confirming the full amount.

After satisfactory identification and verification procedures, the police released the money to Mr. Ofori.

The Police Command commended the officers involved for their professionalism and integrity, as well as members of the public who assisted in drawing attention to the discovered bag.

# KMA demolishes illegal structures in Kumasi decongestion exercise The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has demolished illegal structures in the Asafo area as part of an ongoing exercise to decongest the Kumasi Central Business District and enforce building and sanitation regulations. The operation, carried out with bulldozers, was met with resistance from some occupants, who allegedly pelted members of the KMA task force with stones and other objects. At least one task force member sustained injuries during the exercise. KMA officials said the operation targeted unapproved structures that posed sanitation and security concerns. They explained that no prior notice was given to occupants to prevent attempts to obstruct the exercise. Affected traders, however, insisted they had occupied the land legally after making payments to local authorities and the railway authorities. They argued that they had developed the area over the years and that the demolition had destroyed their businesses and sources of livelihood. The exercise affected several small businesses, including shoemaking, grocery shops and beverage vendors, with many traders expressing concern over the loss of both their workplaces and homes. The KMA maintains that the decongestion exercise will continue as part of efforts to restore order, improve sanitation and enhance security within the Kumasi Central Business District.
