KMA and Rotary Club hold free breast and prostate cancer screening for Asafo Market traders

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International, has organised a free breast and prostate cancer screening exercise for traders at the Asafo Market in Kumasi.

The outreach, held under the theme “Early Detection Saves Lives,” formed part of the global Pink Month campaign aimed at promoting early diagnosis and raising awareness about the dangers of breast and prostate cancer.

The event drew a large turnout of market women who took advantage of the free screening and received vital health education from medical professionals. It also sought to promote preventive healthcare and reduce the rising number of cancer-related deaths in the Ashanti Region.

Mrs Raiza Baba, assistant director at the KMA, urged market women to make regular medical check-ups a habit rather than waiting until symptoms appear before seeking care.

“Prayer and faith are important, but it is equally vital to take proactive steps in safeguarding your health through early detection and treatment,” she said.

Mrs Baba expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International for partnering with the Assembly on such a life-saving initiative and encouraged the public to participate in future screenings.

Mr Avinash Lakhani, president of the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International, reaffirmed the club’s commitment to sustaining such health programmes beyond the Pink Month celebrations. He revealed plans to extend similar screening and awareness initiatives to other communities within and outside Kumasi to ensure more people benefit from early diagnosis and education.

He noted that the exercise aligns with Rotary’s broader mission of promoting good health and community well-being.

Market women who benefited from the initiative expressed gratitude to both the KMA and the Rotary Club for bringing healthcare closer to them. They described the exercise as timely and impactful, saying it had motivated them to prioritise their health and embrace early screening practices.
