GJA’s 29th awards at Manhyia Palace blend culture, royalty and journalism excellence

The 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards unfolded in a rare cultural spectacle at the Royal Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, where traditional pageantry, music and dance set an unforgettable tone for a night honouring Ghana’s finest media professionals.

Held on October 30, 2025, at the historic seat of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the ceremony merged journalism with centuries-old Ashanti tradition. The vibrant showcase of cultural fusions captivated guests as they arrived at the palace, reaffirming the Ashanti Kingdom’s rich heritage.

This year’s event gathered influential voices from across Ghana’s media landscape, underscoring the powerful bond between journalism and chieftaincy in advancing national development. The Asantehene’s presence and his exceptional role throughout the ceremony highlighted the continuing relevance of traditional institutions in shaping the country’s media narrative.

In his remarks, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised the media’s responsibility in safeguarding national peace, strengthening security and promoting constructive development. His call for journalists to uphold the highest ethical standards resonated strongly with attendees.

For many participants, being hosted at the majestic Manhyia Palace and interacting with the Asantehene was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The event also created a unique platform for networking, learning and sharing professional insights.

The awards, themed “Safeguarding Ghana’s future: The role of the media in promoting peace, security, and the fight against galamsey,” drew high-profile dignitaries, including President John Dramani Mahama. Outstanding journalists were honoured for impactful storytelling, with the ceremony reaffirming the media’s central role in peacebuilding and national cohesion.

Relocating the awards from Accra to Kumasi marked a deliberate effort by the GJA to decentralise its activities and energise regional participation. The move strengthened collaboration within the Ashanti media fraternity, creating space for new partnerships and renewed enthusiasm for journalistic growth.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, the 29th GJA Awards represent a significant investment in nationwide media development. The association’s commitment to promoting regional engagement and excellence signals a strengthened path toward a more vibrant and impactful journalism ecosystem in Ghana.
