Ghana Water shuts down Kpeve treatment plant over high turbidity levels

Ghana Water Limited has temporarily suspended operations at the Kpeve Treatment Plant due to extremely high turbidity levels in the raw water source following recent rains.

The company said the current turbidity levels have exceeded the acceptable operational threshold required for safe and effective water treatment, making continued production technically unsafe and operationally unfeasible.

According to management, the rains have increased the movement of sediments, silt and other pollutants into the raw water source, resulting in turbidity levels beyond the treatment capacity of the plant. Operations at the headworks have therefore been temporarily shut down until conditions improve and safe operational standards are restored.

Ghana Water also condemned construction and related activities taking place close to the intake point of the Kpeve Treatment Plant, describing them as a serious threat to the sustainability, safety and reliability of water production in the area.

The company further warned that recreational and construction-related activities around the intake area could continuously compromise raw water quality and create recurring operational and production challenges for the treatment plant.

Management called on relevant authorities, environmental protection agencies, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to intervene to protect the Kpeve water source from further encroachment and environmental degradation.

The company assured consumers that technical teams are monitoring the situation and that water production will resume once turbidity levels return to safe and manageable levels. Consumers have also been advised to use available water judiciously during the shutdown period.
