The Ghana Navy, with support from the Ghana Armed Forces, has successfully rescued 71 fishermen following an armed sea robbery incident off Ghana’s Central Region coast.
Military sources say the fishermen were attacked by armed assailants while operating in Ghana’s territorial waters. The attackers reportedly boarded the fishing vessels, seized valuables and equipment, and left the victims stranded at sea.

After receiving distress signals, naval patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area. A coordinated search and rescue operation was launched, leading to the safe recovery of all 71 fishermen.
The rescued fishermen were escorted back to shore, where they received medical checks and preliminary debriefing from security officials. Authorities indicated that although some personal belongings and fishing equipment were taken, no fatalities were recorded.
The incident has renewed concerns about maritime security along Ghana’s coastline, particularly for artisanal and commercial fishing operators who depend on the sea for their livelihoods.
The Ghana Navy has assured fishing communities of intensified patrols and surveillance operations to deter criminal activities at sea. Military officials reiterated their commitment to protecting Ghana’s maritime domain and ensuring the safety of all lawful sea users.
Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators behind the attack.
