AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine (AGA) has reaffirmed its commitment to education and skills training as cornerstones for building stronger and more resilient communities across its operational areas. He made the remarks during the matriculation ceremony of the fifth cohort of the AngloGold Community Youth Apprenticeship Programme in Obuasi. The initiative forms part of AGA’s 10-year socio-economic development plan and is designed to equip young people in host communities with practical skills that enhance self-reliance and support national development goals.
Out of 2,300 applicants, 105 were selected for this year’s training. Since the programme’s inception in 2019, more than 500 youth have been trained in various technical disciplines, with many securing jobs within the company or venturing into self-employment.
Mr. Agyei disclosed that AngloGold fully funds the training of 100 apprentices annually, covering tuition, personal protective equipment, and a monthly stipend of $150 for each participant.
He also unveiled a new initiative, the Women in Industry Skills Empowerment (WISE) programme, aimed at closing gender gaps in the company’s training pipeline. He described WISE as a demonstration of AngloGold’s commitment to dismantling long-standing barriers that have limited women’s participation in the mining and broader extractive industries.
The WISE initiative will provide hands-on training in mobile crane rigging, fabrication, auto mechanics, industrial mechanics, and auto electrical work. Participants will gain real-world exposure and receive nationally recognised certification to support career progression. This year, 42 women will begin their training under WISE.
Meanwhile, the main youth apprenticeship programme will focus on advanced technical areas such as shaft technician roles, shaft rigging, winder mechanical and electrical work, winder instrumentation, control systems, machinist training, motor rewinding, and condition monitoring.
Mr Agyei urged all apprentices—especially the new WISE entrants—to approach the opportunity with commitment and passion, noting that their success could position them as change makers in their communities.
Several beneficiaries expressed appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti and called for continuous support toward community development in the Obuasi area.
