The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations Hon. Samuel Nartey George has ordered the immediate closure of Gumah FM, a radio station in Bawku, citing national security concerns raised by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

The decision follows an emergency REGSEC meeting on February 11, 2025, where intelligence reports revealed that the station had been used to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in Bawku and parts of the North East Region.

The directive is in accordance with Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which grants the National Communications Authority (NCA) the power to suspend or revoke frequency authorisations in the interest of national security and public order.

As part of the shutdown:

  1. Gumah FM must immediately cease operations.
  2. Authorities will monitor the situation to prevent alternative platforms from being used to incite violence.

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has urged all media houses to operate responsibly and comply with the conditions of their frequency authorisation. The government remains committed to maintaining public safety, upholding the rule of law, and preventing actions that threaten national security.

Further updates will be provided as necessary.
