He said the new Electronic Communications Numbering Resource Registration exercise is intended to address shortcomings identified during the previous SIM registration process.
According to the Minister, the new system will introduce real-time biometric verification through the National Identification Authority (NIA) to help combat SIM swap fraud, mobile money fraud, identity theft and the use of unregistered SIM cards.
He added that the exercise will be supported by enhanced cybersecurity measures and a new legal framework to improve consumer protection and safeguard the National SIM Register.
The Minister said subscribers with compatible smartphones will be able to complete the registration remotely, while additional registration centres, appointment systems and mobile registration teams will be deployed to improve access, particularly in underserved communities.
