Nanton MP was stitched in Parliament after crash before tax vote, says Majority Chief Whip

First Deputy Majority Chief Whip Habib Iddrisu has revealed that Nanton MP Mohammed Hardi Tuferu received emergency medical treatment in Parliament after being involved in a road accident on his way to vote on the government’s revenue bills.

According to Mr Iddrisu, the MP suffered a deep cut on his forehead when his vehicle reportedly somersaulted several times before landing upside down ahead of the parliamentary sitting.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr Iddrisu said Mr Tuferu was attended to by Parliament’s medical team in a washroom rather than the chamber.

He explained that nurses and a doctor from Parliament cleaned the MP’s wounds and stitched the injury before he participated in the vote. The Majority Leader also visited him during the treatment, he added.

“The nurses from Parliament came to attend to him in the washroom. He had minor bruises on his face, so they cleaned it up and even stitched it up,” Mr Iddrisu said.

The revelation comes after criticism from sections of the public, who questioned the decision to bring the injured legislator to Parliament before he was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Mr Iddrisu defended the decision, insisting that appropriate medical care was provided before the MP took part in proceedings.

He also dismissed claims that several Majority MPs were absent during the vote, stating that no member was outside the country and rejecting suggestions that any improper measures were taken to secure the passage of the government’s three new tax bills.
