Speakers at a Gender Advocacy to Parliament (GAP) town hall meeting in Aflao have called for greater female representation in Ghana’s Parliament, arguing that the current composition does not adequately reflect the country’s population.
Ho West MP and Chairman of Parliament’s Minority Caucus, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, said Parliament remains incomplete with only 40 women out of 275 Members of Parliament. He noted that low female representation is also a challenge across the ECOWAS Parliament.

The meeting, organised by Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica) with support from the French Embassy, provided a platform for women and women’s groups to discuss gender-related issues and engage directly with Members of Parliament.
Keta MP Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey encouraged women to actively participate in politics to help bridge the gender gap in national leadership.
Ketu South MP Abla Dzifa Gomashie acknowledged barriers such as cultural norms, limited financial resources, stigma and the nature of politics but urged women to overcome these challenges and pursue leadership opportunities.
Participants emphasised the need for deliberate policies and support to increase women’s representation in Parliament and strengthen gender equality in governance.
