Speaking at the scholarship presentation ceremony, Mr Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, said education remained central to transforming lives and nations. He explained that the Bright Scholarship programme was designed not only to remove financial barriers but also to instil a sense of responsibility in beneficiaries.
“Education unlocks opportunities, powers innovation, and transforms entire nations. For many young people, financial challenges often stand in the way of their dreams. The Bright Scholarship helps to break those barriers, and we expect every beneficiary to make the most of this privilege while giving back to society,” Mr Blewett said.
Since its relaunch in 2018, the scheme has supported 720 students nationwide, producing ten valedictorians, 520 first-class graduates and 94 with upper-second-class honours. Some alumni, he noted, are already excelling in engineering, business, teaching, and community development.
This year’s 500 awardees were selected from 3,691 applicants across 22 public institutions. Of them, 170 are pursuing engineering and ICT-related courses, 80 are in the sciences, 50 in humanities and business, while 33 are differently-abled students.
Mrs Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, described the initiative as an investment in Ghana’s future. “When you empower one student, you impact families, communities, and eventually the nation. The Bright Scholarship reflects MTN’s commitment to giving back to society and nurturing the next generation of leaders,” she said.
Looking ahead, MTN Ghana announced plans to scale up the programme, targeting 1,500 beneficiaries annually in the coming years, with extended support for vocational, technical, and teacher training.
The company urged beneficiaries to excel academically and give back to society, ensuring the scholarship’s positive impact spreads beyond individuals to communities across Ghana.
