GHS receives ambulances and equipment to strengthen border health response

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has received three fully furnished ambulances, laptops, tablets, blood pressure monitors and other medical equipment from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to strengthen health response at Ghana’s borders.

The donation, funded by the government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is expected to improve border management and preparedness for current and future public health emergencies at the Paga, Elubo and Aflao borders.

The support forms part of an IOM-led project aimed at improving Ghana’s capacity to respond to public health crises, including infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, Hisanobu Mochizuki, said the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of strengthening border systems to protect lives while maintaining trade and movement.

He said the equipment would support health officials in providing better services to travellers, border communities, traders and drivers.

The Chief Representative of JICA Ghana stressed the need for strong border health systems to prevent the spread of diseases while allowing economic activities to continue.

GHS Director-General Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye expressed appreciation for the support, saying the equipment would improve safety and health services at Ghana’s borders.
