More than 24,000 pieces of basic medical equipment have been distributed to primary healthcare facilities across Ghana to strengthen the implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme, Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed.

Speaking at a community durbar at the Fian Health Centre in the Daffiama Bussie Issa District in the Upper West Region, Hon. Akandoh indicated that 5,000 healthcare bags containing essential equipment had already been distributed.

He said an additional 5,000 healthcare bags and 7,000 motorbikes and tricycles were expected to be delivered in the coming weeks to support health professionals in providing community-based services.

The Minister said the logistics would enable health professionals to take healthcare directly to homes, churches, mosques and communities, with a focus on prevention and early detection of diseases.

He explained that residents would be screened for conditions such as high blood pressure and high blood sugar and, where necessary, referred for further care. This, he said, would shift healthcare delivery from a predominantly hospital-based approach to one that begins in the community.

Mr. Akandoh stressed that FPHC provides free services at CHPS compounds, health centres and polyclinics, including treatment for common conditions such as malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory infections.
