Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Finance Minister Dr Kwesi Botchwey, describing him as an exceptional public servant, patriot and committed Pan-Africanist whose contribution to Ghana’s development will be remembered.
In a tribute, Mr Akufo-Addo said Dr Botchwey, his contemporary at the University of Ghana, Legon in the mid-1960s, dedicated many years of his life to public service with thoughtfulness, integrity and dignity.

He noted that Dr Botchwey became Ghana’s longest-serving Minister for Finance and Economic Planning and played a significant role in the country’s economic management.
Describing him as a committed Pan-Africanist, Mr Akufo-Addo said Dr Botchwey viewed politics as an opportunity to serve Ghana and the African continent rather than as a platform for personal animosity or political vendettas.
Although they belonged to different political traditions, the former President said their ideological differences never diminished the mutual respect and enduring friendship they shared.
“I will miss him and his urbane, civilised conduct and demeanour,” Mr Akufo-Addo stated.
He said he and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, extended their heartfelt sympathies to Dr Botchwey’s partner, Gwendy, his children and the entire family during their period of bereavement.
Mr Akufo-Addo also conveyed his condolences to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing Dr Botchwey as one of the party’s most respected and distinguished members.
He said Ghana had lost “a fine gentleman and exceptional public servant” and prayed that Dr Botchwey’s soul would rest in perfect peace until the resurrection.
