The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has announced a new national initiative encouraging Ghanaians to dedicate every Wednesday to wearing Fugu, also known as Batakari, as part of efforts to promote and preserve the country’s rich cultural heritage.
In a statement dated 10th February 2026, the Ministry said the decision, taken on behalf of the Government and the people of Ghana, seeks to deepen national cultural awareness and affirm Ghana’s identity both locally and internationally.

The announcement was signed by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP).
The initiative calls on all Ghanaians and friends of Ghana, at home and abroad, to wear Fugu in its diverse forms, designs and expressions, complemented by its distinctive accessories.
According to the Ministry, the move goes beyond cultural symbolism. It is also aimed at stimulating economic activity within the creative and textile sectors.
By promoting the regular wearing of Fugu, government expects to empower local weavers, designers, artisans and traders across the value chain, while creating expanded business and employment opportunities nationwide.
The Ministry expressed optimism that the initiative will strengthen national unity, boost the creative economy and serve as a visible symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.
