The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an internal investigation into a police officer accused of operating unauthorized wooden structures at Asafo BB in Kumasi and allegedly renting them to commercial sex workers.

In a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, the Command said it takes the allegations seriously and assured the public that updates would be provided as investigations progress.

The investigation follows allegations by the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, who claimed some police officers owned unauthorized structures in the area that were being used for prostitution and the sale of illegal drugs.

The claims emerged after the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) demolished illegal structures behind the COCOBOD building at Asafo on July 8 as part of efforts to clear waterways ahead of the rainy season.

The KMA said the exercise was intended to remove unauthorized settlements obstructing drainage channels, but alleged that some of the structures had become centres for criminal activities.

The police say the investigation will determine the extent of the officer’s involvement and any disciplinary action that may be required.
