Paul Eric Ofori, the Head of Research at the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), has voiced criticism against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's recent comments regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, labelling them as premature.
Speaking during a New Year greetings event with the Diplomatic Corps at Peduase, President Akufo-Addo indicated that he would await the Supreme Court's decision on a legal challenge against the bill before making any definitive stance.
However, Mr. Ofori, appearing on Breakfast Daily on Citi TV, argued that since the bill is still in the draft stage, the President's remarks were untimely.
Ofori further urged the government to address corruption loopholes to bolster the country's financial independence, thus enabling it to withstand potential threats from the international community to cut aid in opposition to the bill's passage.
Highlighting the ongoing drafting process of the bill, Ofori emphasized that the document had yet to reach the President's desk, making his comments premature.
He underscored the importance of addressing corruption within the nation, citing concerns over the loss of significant financial resources annually.
Ofori urged national leadership to take decisive action in combating corruption and reducing government expenditure, emphasizing the need to bolster financial independence to alleviate reliance on foreign aid.
The critique from COPEC's Head of Research sheds light on concerns regarding the timing of President Akufo-Addo's remarks and underscores the importance of addressing corruption and financial stability within the nation.
