The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) has officially commenced its Silver Jubilee celebration with a call to stakeholders to collaborate in revitalizing the Agency for sustainable water supply system delivery and management.
Dr. Freda Prempeh, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, urged stakeholders to join hands for the sustainable delivery and management of water supply systems.
She announced collaboration efforts with CWSA and partners to secure funding for two projects benefiting five districts in the Volta Region under the STRABAG Project.
Additionally, a proposed USD250 million sustainable safe water and sanitation improvement project is slated for implementation across all 16 regions in the country.
The minister emphasized the need to address the 37.92 percent of rural communities still lacking access to safe water, emphasizing the goal to achieve Sustainable Development Goal Six by 2030.
Dr. Prempeh revealed that a memorandum seeking Cabinet approval for policy reform to amend CWSA's current mandate had been approved. The reform aims to transform the Agency into a public utility organization similar to the Ghana Water Company.
Mr. Peter O. Sackey, founding Chief Executive of CWSA, reflected on the 25-year history of the Agency, highlighting its establishment under Act 1998 (564) to provide water to rural areas and small towns.
Dr. Worlanyo Kwadjo Siabi, Chief Executive of CWSA, outlined the Agency's achievements between 2017 and 2023, including modernizing operations, rehabilitating water systems, integrating solar energy, and increasing water coverage from 27 percent to 62.61 percent from 1990 to 2022.
The anniversary celebration events will include exhibitions and community engagements.
