Ghana's captain, Andre Ayew, has achieved a historic milestone by participating in his eighth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition.
Ayew's inclusion in the 2023 AFCON in Cote D'Ivoire places him among the elite group of players who have graced the tournament eight times.
Ayew, aged 34, shares this distinction with Tunisian captain Youssef Msakni, and together, they join the esteemed company of Cameroonian Rigobert Song and Egyptian Ahmed Hassan, who held the record since 2010.
Having debuted in 2008 at the age of 18, Ayew has been a consistent presence in AFCON, with his only absence occurring in the 2013 edition due to injury.
Despite accumulating 118 caps for Ghana, including 35 in AFCON, Ayew and Msakni are yet to clinch the ultimate trophy.
Rigobert Song and Ahmed Hassan, the previous record-holders, both participated in eight TotalEnergies CAF AFCON competitions between 1996 and 2010.
Song won two titles in 2000 and 2002, while Hassan secured four trophies in 1998, 2006, 2008, and 2010.
Ayew and Msakni, despite their extensive experience, are still in pursuit of AFCON glory.
