The Ghana Revenue Authority Workers Union (GRAWU) has called on the government to provide the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) with the necessary technology and resources to enhance revenue collection. Speaking at the 10th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Accra, Mr. Theophilus Kwesi Ehun, the Chairman of GRAWU, emphasized the importance of GRA's role in the economy and reiterated the union's commitment to supporting strategies that improve revenue collection.
The theme of the NEC meeting, “Transparency and Fairness in Tax System Revenue Mobilization: The Role of Labor,” underscored the significance of promoting transparency and efficiency in tax administration. Mr. Ehun highlighted the dedication of GRA staff to achieving revenue targets and stressed that without GRA, both the union and the economy would face challenges.
Addressing the meeting, the Commissioner of Customs, Alhaji Seidu Iddrisu Iddisah, emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the tax system for effective revenue mobilization. He outlined GRA's commitment to increasing transparency through simplifying tax codes, providing clear information to taxpayers, and ensuring efficient communication channels.
Mr. Iddisah stressed the need for fairness in the tax system to prevent discontent and encourage compliance. He called on Ghanaian workers to advocate for progressive tax structures that ensure high-income earners contribute proportionally and educate members about their tax obligations.
In conclusion, Mr. Iddisah highlighted the importance of transparency and fairness in building a tax system that inspires trust and fosters a sense of shared responsibility among all Ghanaians. The collaboration between the government, GRA, and labour unions like GRAWU is essential for achieving these objectives and ensuring sustainable revenue mobilization for national development.
