Accountant accused of tax evasion granted bail: Ghana News

Michael Sumnaya Adedina, an accountant with Medeena Consult Limited, accused of forging (GRA) receipts to evade tax totaling GH₵2,495,778, has been granted bail by an Circuit Court.

Adedina, appearing for the third time in court, was granted bail for GH₵2 million cedis with three sureties to be justified.

The trial judge, Mrs. Afua Owusua Appiah, remarked, “I am inclined to admit the accused person to bail.”

As part of the bail conditions, Adedina is required to report fortnightly to the case investigator and deposit his passport at the court registry.

The court also instructed the prosecution to file their disclosures, adjourning the matter to February 21, 2024.

Representing the state, Mr. Adu Gyamfi, an Assistant State Attorney, appeared alongside Mr. Nsiah Opoku and two other lawyers representing Adedina, who has pleaded not guilty to charges including forgery, stealing, and making false statements.

The prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Evans Kesse, narrated that Adedina, posing as a professional accountant, managed the accounting affairs of BMG Infrastructure Company Limited.

However, an audit revealed a tax debt of GH₵2,495,778 against the firm, leading to suspicions.

Investigations unveiled that Adedina had failed to remit the collected taxes to GRA, instead falsifying official receipts.

Adedina admitted to modifying GRA payment receipts and diverting the funds for personal gains, including purchasing vehicles and property.

Prosecution stated, “Further investigation is underway to identify those assets,” underscoring ongoing efforts to uncover the extent of Adedina's alleged financial malpractice.
