The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has unveiled the Ghana House Architectural Design Competition, an ambitious national contest set to redefine the architectural identity of Ghana’s diplomatic missions across the world.

The initiative officially begins on Thursday, November 6, 2025, marking a major step in the Ministry’s Strategic Transition from Renting to Infrastructure Development (STRIDE) policy.

STRIDE represents a decisive shift from the long-standing reliance on rented embassy buildings to a bold future of state-owned, Ghana-designed diplomatic infrastructure.

The aim is to establish permanent embassy facilities that reflect Ghana’s culture, resilience and national pride while promoting sustainability and long-term cost efficiency.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the competition as a milestone in the country’s foreign policy infrastructure agenda.

He emphasised that Ghana House is expected to become an iconic global symbol of Ghana’s creativity, heritage and modern identity. Importantly, the competition seeks to uphold transparency, merit and broad national participation.

To ensure professional excellence, the Ministry is partnering with the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA), which will oversee the competition’s administration. Participation is open exclusively to Ghanaian architects and firms in good standing with the Institute. An independent panel will evaluate all submissions and select the top three winning designs.

Key Dates for the Competition

  • November 7, 2025: Competition officially opens
  • November 10, 2025: Deadline for requests from participants
  • November 13, 2025: Responses to all queries issued
  • December 1, 2025: Deadline for design submissions
  • December 2, 2025: Submissions presented to judges
  • December 4–5, 2025: Judging period
  • December 8, 2025: Announcement of winners and prize presentation
  • December 15–31, 2025: Public exhibition of top three designs

The Competition Brief, including technical details and evaluation criteria, will be published on the official GIA website immediately after the launch.

The Ministry called on architects nationwide to see this as a nation-building opportunity, contributing to the visual and cultural identity Ghana presents on the global stage. It also urged the public to follow only official digital platforms of the Ministry and the GIA for accurate information, cautioning against misinformation from unofficial sources.

The Ghana House competition stands as a bold statement of vision, uniting creativity, culture and diplomacy to shape how Ghana is seen across the world for generations to come.
