The C40 Cities network, in partnership with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and DTT Energy Ghana Limited, has launched the AMA Energy Efficiency Campaign, aimed at transforming behaviours and strengthening staff capacity to drive energy savings.

The pilot project, branded “Light Up Smart” and “Power Down, Power Up Accra!”, seeks to make energy-conscious behaviour simple, visible, and impactful within City Hall, under the guiding message that every action counts.

Project consultant Mr. Lawrence Musey of DTT Energy Ghana Limited explained that much of the Assembly’s energy use stems from behavioural lapses rather than equipment inefficiency. “Our programme emphasises changing behaviours and building capacity. This isn’t just about installing new equipment; it’s about empowering people to be part of the solution,” he said, noting that baseline data is being collected to measure financial savings, energy reductions, and greenhouse gas impacts.

Mr. Evans Asamoah, C40’s focal person in Accra, described the initiative as a milestone for both Accra and the global C40 network, noting that it aligns the city’s Climate Action Plan with the Paris Agreement. “By focusing on municipal buildings, Accra sets an inspiring example for other cities, especially in the Global South,” he stated, adding that lessons from the project, including the ‘Energy Champion’ model and virtual training tools, will be shared across cities from Lagos to Jakarta.

Chief Executive of the AMA, Mr. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, stressed that small daily actions such as turning off lights, moderating air conditioning, and shutting down idle equipment can significantly reduce both operational costs and the city’s carbon footprint. “This is a strategic pilot for a city-wide initiative. Our flagship building must set the standard. The data-driven insights we gather will shape a scalable model for schools, hospitals, and eventually the entire metropolis,” he affirmed.

The campaign’s success, leaders say, could position Accra as a benchmark city for smart, scalable, and equitable climate solutions, attracting international partnerships and green finance while building resilience for the future.
