Traffic in Accra to face diversions ahead of state funeral for helicopter crash victims

The Ghana Police Service has announced that traffic in Accra will experience diversions and delays on Friday due to the presence of dignitaries attending the State funeral of eight victims of the August 6, 2025, helicopter tragedy.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng, Director of Education and Training at the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD), disclosed at a pre-funeral press conference at Blackstar Square that traffic control operations would begin from Thursday midday and continue through the night into Friday morning. The measures aim to ensure a smooth flow for mourners, family members and VIP guests.

From 5:00 a.m. Friday, traffic police will manage movement from La, Labone and Osu through Blackstar Square to the Central Business District. Intermittent diversions will guide regular commuters around the funeral venue. Traffic from La Road will be diverted to Oxford Street, while vehicles from Lokko Street heading through Blackstar Square to Ministries, Makola and Jamestown will be redirected via Castle Road to Independence Avenue and onward to Kinbu.

Similarly, traffic from Jamestown along the Professor John Evans Atta Mills High Street will be diverted to Liberia Road from the CEPS Headquarters, through the Ministries Traffic Light, to the National Theatre. Additional diversions will be enforced at the Ministry Traffic Light for vehicles heading towards Blackstar Square, routing them back to Independence Avenue.

Designated parking, including the large Agric car park near Blackstar Square, will be managed by deployed police officers to accommodate the expected crowd.

Superintendent Obeng urged the public to comply with the arrangements, noting there are several alternative routes available to reach the city centre without disruption.
