A 34-year-old National Security Operative, identified as Willis Amoako Kotei, has made a court appearance following accusations of conspiring with three others to defraud a businessman by posing as sellers of an excavator.
Kotei, reportedly employed at the Jubilee House, purportedly led the complainant to a yard in Tema, showcasing a Saby Excavator listed for sale at GH¢14 million. Subsequently, the complainant made an initial payment of GH¢467,000 towards the total cost.
Upon arraignment, Kotei pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretences. However, he was granted bail by Dansoman Circuit Court Judge, Halimah El Alawal Abdul-Basit, in the sum of GH¢180,000 with stringent conditions.
The defence, arguing for bail, emphasized Kotei's responsible nature and assured compliance with bail terms. In contrast, the prosecution opposed bail, citing Kotei's failure to report to the police after being granted police enquiry bail.
The prosecution outlined the alleged fraudulent scheme, involving Kotei and his associates, who presented themselves as staff of the Jubilee House. They purportedly agreed to sell the excavator to the complainant for GH¢14 million, with the initial deposit collected at the Jubilee House.
Following Kotei's arrest, he refunded GH¢295,000 to the complainant but failed to pay the remaining amount as promised. Efforts are underway to apprehend Kotei's accomplices, who remain at large.
The court has adjourned the matter to May 6, 2024, as legal proceedings continue.
