Ghana's newly acquired train, intended for operation on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, was involved in an accident during a test run in the Asuogyaman district, the Ministry of Railways Development confirmed in a statement dated Thursday, April 18, 2024.
The incident occurred around 12:10 pm when the train encountered a stationary vehicle positioned across the rail track as it approached a curve at Km76+100. Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train collided with the vehicle, resulting in minor damage to the driver's cab section of the train. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded, and passengers, drivers, crew, and bystanders were all reported safe.
The Ministry clarified that the vehicle was unmanned, and the location where it was found is not designated as an authorized level crossing. The incident has been reported to the police, and investigations are underway to determine its circumstances. The damaged train has been moved to the workshop for assessment and necessary repairs.
Minister of Railway Development, Peter Amewu, assured the public of safety and emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the continued safe operation of the railway system. He stated that engineers are currently assessing the damage to the train, with no disruptions to its electrical or engine functionality reported. Efforts are underway to expedite repairs through the involvement of the insurance company.
Regarding community awareness, Amewu noted that community members were informed of the test run. Reports suggesting the procurement of 12 trains for the Ghana Railways Company were denied by the Ghana Railway Development Authority.
