Commuters urged not to pay additional transport fares

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union () and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have jointly issued a statement advising commuters not to pay any additional transport fares amidst recent arbitrary increases by some drivers.

In the press release, the and GRTCC emphasized that such fare hikes are illegal and contravene the Administrative Instrument on the review of public transport fares. They clarified that they had not reached a consensus with the Ministry of Transport on adjusting fares in response to recent rises in fuel prices and operational costs.

The statement highlighted the customary practice of the transport leadership meeting with the Ministry of Transport to present demands and reach a consensus. Until such agreement is reached and communicated to the public, any fare increase beyond the Administrative Instrument should be disregarded.

The GPRTU and GRTCC urged commuters not to pay any fare outside the existing fares and advised drivers to abide by this directive. They called upon Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, as well as Station Welfare Committees, to ensure compliance with existing fares.

Assuring transport operators of their commitment to advocating for their welfare, the GPRTU and GRTCC reaffirmed their dedication to representing the interests of transport operators.
