Severe rainstorm damages Yariga Basic School, urgent support needed

A recent severe rainstorm in the Yariga community, Municipality of the Region, wreaked havoc on the Yariga Basic School, causing significant damage to a three-unit classroom block. The storm's strong winds not only pulled down the classroom blocks but also ripped off roofing sheets from several buildings in the area.

During a visit by the (GNA) to the school, it was observed that pupils and students were absent due to the situation, exacerbated by the unavailability of sitting spaces. in combined classes struggled to manage the few pupils who attended school.

Mr. Peter Kassah, Chairman of the Community Management Committee, expressed concern that over 200 pupils would have to study under trees if immediate support was not provided. He called on philanthropists and the Municipal Assembly to come to their aid.

Mr. Philip Kwadwo Bidaba, the Assembly member of Kwame-Akura East Electoral Area, reported the situation to the Municipal National Disaster Management Organization () and appealed to authorities and non-governmental organizations for assistance.

Mr. Jacob Desiavor, the Municipal Director, confirmed the assessment of the situation and reported it to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) before his sudden demise on April 5, 2024. Despite the unfortunate event, efforts are underway to mobilize resources and address the damage to the school structure.

Immediate support is crucial to ensure the continuity of education for the affected students and alleviate the challenges faced by the Yariga Basic School community.
