The Ghana Mineworkers' Union, under the Trades Union Congress, has announced plans for a five-day protest starting on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Jubilee House. The purpose of the protest is to urge the government to revoke the mining lease of Future Global Resources Limited, operators of the Bogoso-Prestea Mines.
The union contends that Future Global Resources has not demonstrated sufficient financial capability to effectively manage the mine since assuming control in 2020. During a media briefing, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, the General Secretary of the union, questioned the delay in revoking the license despite recommendations from the Minerals Commission to do so.
The protest is scheduled to begin at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources from April 15th to the 17th, after which it will move to the Jubilee House on the 18th and 19th. Gbana emphasized the need for the Minister to take decisive action in line with the law, given the recommendations provided by the Minerals Commission and the Attorney General's Department.
The union has also outlined an operational plan to revive the mine while awaiting potential investors to take over. Gbana highlighted the capabilities of the current workforce at Future Global Resources mine, comprising solely of nationals, expressing confidence in their ability to proficiently operate the mine with minimal financial support.
