Somaliland delegation in Ghana to study Civic Education system

A delegation from Somaliland has arrived in Ghana to study the country's civic education system spearheaded by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), with the aim of replicating its success in their own nation.

Led by Mr Abdirisak Yusuf Jama, Director of the Centre for Civic Education and Constitutional Training at the Ministry of Parliamentary Relations and Constitutional Affairs in Somaliland, the delegation includes Mr Mohamed Lali Cuman, Director of the National Curriculum Development Centre at the Ministry of Education.

In Accra, the delegation was welcomed by Ms. Kathleen Addy, Chairperson of the NCCE, who emphasized the crucial role of civic education in upholding democracy. She highlighted the consequences faced by countries that neglect civic education, underscoring the importance of institutions like the NCCE in Ghana.

Ms. Addy expressed gratitude for the existence of the NCCE and its timely establishment, stressing the Commission's commitment to its mandate as outlined in the country's constitution. She reiterated the NCCE's dedication to assisting the delegation from Somaliland in building a strong civic education system.

Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah, Deputy Chair in charge of Operations at the NCCE, commended Somaliland for initiating efforts to establish civic education in their country. He encouraged the delegation to seek technical assistance from countries with established civic education systems and to advocate for government support and protection of the system once established.

In response, Mr. Jama praised the NCCE for its robust civic education system, noting that the delegation had gained valuable leadership insights, experience, and encouragement from their interactions with the Commission. He expressed confidence that these learnings would enable them to replicate a similar system in Somaliland.

The delegation's visit also included meetings with other relevant institutions, such as the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), and planned engagements with the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party. These interactions aim to further enhance their understanding and gather insights for the successful implementation of civic education initiatives in Somaliland.
