Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, a prominent political analyst, has made strong allegations against President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of pressuring Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to step down from his position as the leader of the Majority Caucus in Parliament.
Speaking during an interview on Accra-based Radio Gold, Dr Amoako Baah claimed that the President wielded the sole authority to remove Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu from his leadership role, leaving no doubt about his involvement in the resignation.
The sudden resignation came following a significant meeting between Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and key figures of the NPP leadership at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
Dr. Amoako Baah went further to question the legal basis for the President's actions, emphasizing that only the President holds the power to force such a resignation.
“If he has been forced to resign, then the president forced him to resign from the position of Minister of Parliamentary Affairs because that is the only position he can be forced to resign from. You cannot force him to resign as Majority Leader.”
He continued, “So if anybody forced him to resign, it must be the president. Nobody else has that power except the president and so he cannot deny that he forced him to resign.”
Dr. Amoako Baah clarified that he wasn't assigning blame to the President but rather pointing out the exercise of his power. He noted that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's subsequent appointment as chairman of the NPP's manifesto committee and Alexander Afenyo-Markin's announcement as Majority Leader seemed to support his assertions.
The accusations by Dr. Amoako Baah add to the ongoing speculation and discussion surrounding the recent leadership changes within the NPP and Parliament.
